  • Pain or burning during urination: This could be a symptom of STIs such as gonorrhea or trichomoniasis in both men and women.

  • Redness, itching, or irritation: Constant itching in the genital area might point to pubic lice or yeast infections.

  • Sores, bumps, or warts: Lesions around the mouth or genitals may suggest herpes or human papillomavirus (HPV).

  • Body rashes: A rash on the hands or soles of the feet may be an early sign of syphilis.

Some of the commonly occurring Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) are:

HIV

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is an infection that attacks the body’s immune system. Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is the most advanced stage of the disease. HIV targets the body’s white blood cells, weakening the immune system. This makes it easier to get sick with diseases like tuberculosis, infections and some cancers.

HIV is spread from the body fluids of an infected person, including blood, breast milk, semen and vaginal fluids. It is not spread by kisses, hugs or sharing food. It can also spread from a mother to her baby. HIV can be treated and prevented with antiretroviral therapy (ART). Untreated HIV can progress to AIDS, often after many years.

Syphilis

It is a preventable and curable bacterial sexually transmitted infection (STI). If untreated, it can cause serious health issues. Many people with syphilis do not have symptoms or do not notice them.

Syphilis is transmitted during oral, vaginal, and anal sex, in pregnancy, and through blood transfusion. If anyone has symptoms of this disease, they have to take a syphilis test in order to identify whether the person is infected or not. Syphilis in pregnancy may lead to stillbirth, newborn death, and babies born with syphilis (congenital syphilis).

Syphilis testing plays a crucial role in preventing the spread and complications of this infection. A syphilis test is not only recommended for individuals who exhibit symptoms but also for those who may have been exposed to the infection through unprotected sex or other high-risk activities.

Chlamydia

It is a common sexually transmitted infection that can occur in both men and women. It is caused by a bacterium called Chlamydia trachomatis. It is easily treated and cured with antibiotics.

If not treated, chlamydia can cause serious problems, including infertility and ectopic pregnancy. In pregnant women, it can cause the baby to be born early (prematurity).

Gonorrhea

Is a common sexually transmitted infection caused by a type of bacteria. It usually spreads through vaginal, oral and anal sex. Gonorrhea is treatable and curable with antibiotics and is detected via a gonorrhea test. Gonorrhea causes different symptoms in women and men. Women often feel no symptoms, but untreated infection can lead to infertility and problems during pregnancy.

Common symptoms in men include pain or burning when urinating, discharge from the penis and sometimes pain in the testes. Gonococcal infection increases the risk of getting and spreading HIV.

Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV)

It is known as herpes, is a common infection that can cause painful blisters or ulcers. It primarily spreads by skin-to-skin contact. It is treatable but not curable. There are two types of herpes simplex virus.

Type 1 (HSV-1): Mostly spreads by oral contact and causes infections in or around the mouth (oral herpes or cold sores). It can also cause genital herpes. Most adults are infected with HSV-1.

Type 2 (HSV-2): Spreads by sexual contact and causes genital herpes. Most people have no symptoms or only mild symptoms. The infection can cause painful blisters or ulcers that can recur over time. Medicines can reduce symptoms but can’t cure the infection.

Trichomoniasis

Is a common sexually transmitted infection caused by a parasite. In women, trichomoniasis can cause a foul-smelling vaginal discharge, genital itching and painful urination. Men who have trichomoniasis typically have no symptoms.
